- Discussion about elementary level chromebook filtering and access options
- Corrie Barrett reviewed how CSD partners with parents
- Parents need serial numbers of chromebook to use Technology connect portal to monitor login time
- Usage means how long the chromebook is open, not necessarily how long students are using them
- Some words are flagged that aren’t actually inappropriate
- In the future, parents will recieve an email when students search an inappropraite word.
- Go to tcp.canyonsdistrict.org to change filtering options.
- Doesd Safe Search apply to other search engines?
- No it just works on google, but only google is allowed
- Searches within apps (like YouTube) don’t work with SafeSearch
- YouTube can’t be accessed through the google suie anymore
- Why are certain sites allowed if safesearch can’t be applies?
- IT doesn’t have power to make policy decisions. There are several committees who work together to make decisions.
- the district is more focused on the appropriatemess of the application and less on the search capabilities. Is the content appropraite and useful for students
- There are strong processes, procedures and policies to determine that.
- Sometimes apps change over time, and if the become inappropraite for students they can be removed.
- Liz Palmer: Who is responsible for keeping up with the apps to know if they are staying appropriate for students?
- no specific employee, but staff, IT, parents can ask and they will be reviewed. Content Keeper has fulltime people who are managing it.
- Reviewed immediate actions CSD has taken
- Reviewed filtering systems used by CSD Contentkeeper
- Highest restrictive is a whitelist, all internet is blocked
- Does CSD filtering work on a district chromebook at home?
- Yes. It will override a home filtering network
- If you log into your disrict account on you personal chromebook device, district filtering will apply
- If you log in on any other personal device , no district filtering will happen
- Looked at the three options for filtering
- 1. No Change. Parents can request higher restrictions
- 2. All elementary chromebooks will be on highly restrictive
- 3. All elementary chromebooks will be on highly restrictive but parents can opt into less restrictive settings.
- PBIS rewards should be white listed
- White listing requires pre approval of sies, so sites that are needed have to be requested in advancde of research or use
- Is having students on highly restrictive settings difficult for teachers?
- Yes, it takes more time for teachers. They have to adapt their teachings for those induvidual students.
- There is alot of staff asking for sites to be reviewed
- If we go with option 2 or 3, will that change things dramatically for teachers?
- PBIS should be allowed, but it’s being filtered as a gaming site so it’s being denied
- Sites are sometimes rolled into multiple categories so they’ll sometimeshit the filter in a different way and stay blocked
- Should CSD eliminate access to students accounts after school hours?
- Parents should be responsible for what is happening at home.
- Chrislyn Woolston: Students have figured out how to go to someone else’s house and access inappropriate material at home.
- Anyone can access google with out an account
- Parents need serial numbers of chromebook to use Technology connect portal to monitor login time
- Brookwood SCC recommends option 1 (11 for option 1, 2 for option 3)
- Brookwood SCC 10 voted no to turning off access to accounts after school, 1 voted yes, 2 said they are interested in looking into it.
- District-wide boundry changes/school closures: Katie Dahl
- Not as many children in the schools
- 10 schools have student populations under 375
- Idealy want 3-4 classes per grade
- $1.2 million to keep an elementary school building open
- Legislature isn’t giving enough money to maintain our schools or teacher raises
- School board is looking at options for closing some elementary schools and realigning upper school boundaries
- Recommendations by Dec. 31st for the 26-27 school year
